The Maricopa Community Colleges participate annually in the Start! Phoenix Heart Walk. The Heart Walk is an event to raise money to fight our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 causes of death — heart disease and stroke. Funds raised through the Heart Walk support research, community service and public and professional education programs. The Chancellor supports it as a District welllness event, and both Rio and the District Office employees get wellness points for participating.
Ren Carlson and Sylvia Enriquez co-captained the "Ren's Hens" team for the District Office. This year's goal for each college was to raise $4,000 and each team's goal was to raise $1,500. This is the first year that both employees participated in the Heart Walk. With much enthusiasm, they recruited 11 team members and built-up excitement for the event. As captains, they helped create competition between the District Office teams which resulted in increased fundraising for the event. The Ren's Hens team raised $3,956! They almost reached the goal that was set for an entire college. In fact, the Ren's Hens team raised more for this event than nine of the colleges. Additionally, they helped the District Office raise $13,003, the most the District Office has ever raised for this event. As team leaders, they did an outstanding job and definitely deserve a BRAVO! for their coordination and contribution of this event. In response to a challenge that Ren and Sylvia made if they raised a certain amount, Ren dressed in a rooster costume that made quite a scene at the walk. Photos are available.
