Legal
Services Offers Students and Employees
a Wealth of Legal Resources
The
Legal Services Department has a variety of resources available to Maricopa
students and employees on topics such as sexual harassment, employee rights,
copyright issues, etc.
Brochures
The department has a library of free brochures on legal issues of special
interest to the Maricopa community. Titles include Sexual Harassment At
Work, Sexual Harassment On Campus, The Rights of Employees with Disabilities,
and The Rights of Students with Disabilities. Copies of these brochures
can be obtained from various locations at each college and center, or
on request from the Legal Services Department.
Newsletter
Copies of previous issues of our in-house quarterly newsletter,
In Brief (now in its
second year of publication), are also available on request from the Legal
Department; or, read the published articles online under Department
Publications.
Web Site
Our web site provides visitors general information on legal-related services
as well as other resources offered by the department, including minutes
and motions from Governing Board meetings, review of contracts and clinical
agreements, insurance, affirmative action and equal employment opportunity,
and travel reduction.
On-Line Tutorial
What constitutes sexual harassment? What is quid pro quo harassment? Or,
a hostile environment? What are employees' responsibilities when they
witness peer sexual harassment? Both students and employees can test their
knowledge of sexual harassment law on our interactive "Sexual
Harassment On-Line Tutorial."
Audio Cassette Tape
At best, many legal topics can be mundane. At worst, they can be downright
dull. So, in order to present legal information in an enlightening and
pleasant way, the Legal Services Department, in partnership with radio
stations KJZZ and KBAQ, has produced an audio cassette tape tutorial,
"Basic Law In Brief."
Now, simply by listening to the tape (about a half-hour in length), a
listener can acquire a basic understanding on five timely issues: the
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), work-related liability,
sexual harassment, copyright law, and the District's internal discrimination-complaint
procedures.
Adding to the ease of listening to the instructional tape is the professional
talent provided by KJZZ and KBAQ personalities Sterling Beeaff, Laura
Carlson, Blaise Lantana, Jeff Parets and Bill Shedd, as well as the stations'
general manager, Carl Matthusen.
"Basic
Law In Brief" will be available at each of the college libraries.
To find out other locations where it is available throughout the District,
contact the Legal Services Department.
We are constantly developing new methods to deliver informative updates
and information to the Maricopa family. If you have any questions or input
regarding any of the above items, please call us at 480.731.8876.
