Last night, June 9, 2020, the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) Governing Board voted on measures designed to ease the financial burden on students and families in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Maricopa Community Colleges will invest $13.5M for additional FAFSA-based Student Scholarship Grants for credit and clock hour students, which includes last dollar grants for partial-Pell-eligible students and up to $400 grants for non-Pell-eligible students.
The Board also approved a 'Flat Rate Full-Time' for students taking more than 12 credit hours. Students registering for more than 12 credits per term will receive the discounted Full-Time Flat-Rate Tuition. Students do not have to preselect this plan, but will be automatically enrolled once the 12-credit per term threshold has been reached.
Students who recently moved to Maricopa County with a local permanent address will receive the in-state tuition rate for up to 6 hours. For additional hours, these students will then be charged at current applicable out-of-state rate.
"Accessible higher education is not a new issue, and the coronavirus has only raised the profile of this deepening problem. Providing our students these additional funds will ease some of the financial burden our students are facing as a result of COVID-19." said Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, Interim Chancellor. "We will continue to create better opportunities for all students and assist them in identifying careers and degree opportunities that help rebuild Arizona’s economy. No matter your background, race, or socioeconomic status, you are welcome to pursue a degree at one of our Colleges."
