Learning With Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Students will have to learn how to navigate life with Artificial Intelligence (AI), and one of the most powerful ways AI is shaping our world is through education. Many generative AI tools are available to assist you with writing, research, and even math, but, as with any tool, AI isn’t perfect.
Limitations of Generative AI
Many of the generative AI tools listed below are clear about their limitations. Here are some of the most common issues to be aware of as you use these tools to assist you in your classes:
- They may occasionally generate incorrect information
- They may occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content
- They may have limited knowledge of the current world and recent events
- They will not make ethical decisions for you
- They can learn from each interaction, so be careful sharing sensitive or personal content with generative AIs
Ask Your Instructor
Many faculty set limitations around the use of AI in their classes. Depending on specific course policies, some uses of AI meet the standard of academic misconduct and can result in failure of an assignment and/or a course. As with any topic in college, if you have a question about whether or not you can or should use a specific tool to assist you in your coursework, be sure to refer to your syllabus and discuss the issue with your instructor.
