In celebration of National Native American Heritage Month, the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) will host events at many of the Maricopa Community Colleges honoring Native American, American Indian, and Indigenous culture, traditions and heritage.
"The Maricopa Community Colleges are proud to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of our Native American and Indigenous students, as well as our campuses located on the ancestral lands and within the boundaries of many of Arizona’s tribal nations," said MCCCD Interim Chancellor, Dr. Steven R. Gonzales. "Our District is committed to serving our Native American and Indigenous students with exceptional educational opportunities and targeted support, including our Hoop of Learning high-school-to-college educational pathway. We look forward to a month of continued education and honoring the traditions and histories of many tribal nations."
Events happening throughout November allow participants to explore Native American heritage through dance, song, art exhibits and installations, spoken word and stories, cuisine, film, history, traditional clothing, and discussion.
All events are open to the public, with both in-person and virtual offerings.

Collaborative Art Project

Paradise Valley Community College invites the public to participate in a collaborative art project honoring the indigenous people who lived in and near the PVCC campus area before the modern era. The Piipaash, also known as the Maricopa people, along with the Salt River Authm people lived in this area of Phoenix. A ceramic mural will be designed, fabricated and installed by all who choose to participate. The project will be guided and informed by Native American artists Dustin Lopez and Kaily Toney.
*No art experience necessary. The artists will be available every Friday from 3 - 5 p.m. throughout the Fall 2021 semester for the creation of the mural.
