The Maricopa County Community College District Interim Chancellor, Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, issued the following statement today (May 14) related to Governor Doug Ducey's Back to Work Plan.

"Enrollment in community colleges across Arizona has drastically declined as a result of the pandemic. The Maricopa Community Colleges have experienced a 15 percent enrollment decline, which equates to 15,000 fewer students entering our skilled workforce or transferring on to our universities. This decline is an alarming workforce and economic concern. The Governor’s Arizona Back to Work plan will undoubtedly support getting people back into the classroom and on a path to a brighter future.

Community colleges serve a critical role in reskilling and upskilling our workforce, whom the pandemic has negatively impacted over the past year. We appreciate Governor Ducey for his forward-thinking to utilize community colleges as an essential community asset to help support his employment and economic recovery goals and look forward to working with him and his staff through the implementation of this plan."
