The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) is proud to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month in June, recognizing Maricopa peers who identify in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) community.

“As we celebrate Pride Month, I am reflecting on the amazing LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff whose thoughtful perspectives help shape the Maricopa Community Colleges,” said MCCCD Interim Chancellor, Dr. Steven R. Gonzales. “I work alongside so many outstanding members of the LGBTQIA+ community who make the Maricopa Community Colleges more dynamic by sharing their identities. I am proud to continue to advocate for inclusion and acceptance, and guide our System in the fight against intolerance and bias.”

The Maricopa Community Colleges will kick off Pride Month with an event hosted by Paradise Valley Community College. The District invites community members to join in welcoming Pride Month either virtually or in-person.

Trans and queer folx have long thrived outside normative relational expectancies. Pushed out of their families of origins, many trans and queer folx are left to their own devices, cultivating survival in relation with one another. Join Dr. LeMaster as she traces the roots of queer and trans relating historically and in contemporary context. In the end, attendees are invited to honor the ways we always and already evade normativity through relating otherwise.

The District also invites community members to join a collaborative forum hosted by Rio Salado College and the American Public University System on Wednesday, June 29 from 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. More information and registration can be found at https://deibcollaborativeforum622.splashthat.com/.

In addition to Pride Month celebrations, the Maricopa Community Colleges are proud to offer employees support through Equality Maricopa, an employee group comprised of those who identify as LGBTQIA+ or as an ally. The group’s mission is to offer support and visibility for members, to provide educational and awareness opportunities about LGBTQIA+ issues to employees, and to provide an official point of contact between membership and the Maricopa Community Colleges, as well as other, external LGBTQIA+ organizations and the student Gay / Straight Alliances.

As we celebrate Pride Month, watch to hear stories of pride from Maricopa students about the positive impact inclusion and acceptance have on the LGBTQ+ community. The Maricopa Community Colleges are proud to showcase the diverse identities of all of our students.
