The Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board held a special meeting on January 18, 2022, to elect new officers. MCCCD Board members unanimously re-elected both Marie Sullivan as President and Tom Nerini, Ed.D., as Governing Board Secretary.  Ms. Sullivan will serve an unprecedented third consecutive year as Governing Board President. The seven Governing Board members are elected from five geographical districts within Maricopa County and two at-large positions representing the entire county. Board members are elected in staggered years to four-year terms.

“As Governing Board President, it has been a privilege to lead and to work with my colleagues and District leadership to advance the MCCCD System in all aspects, and particularly, to sustain and create programs and other offerings to ensure our students have opportunities to enhance their personal lives and contribute to the social and economic vitality of their families and our communities,” said President Sullivan. “I am honored to have been re-elected as President by my colleagues to continue in this leadership role as we continue to work collaboratively and openly to pursue our shared vision for the District - to be best in class through excellence in teaching and learning practices.”

Ms. Sullivan, who represents District 3, has been serving on the District’s Governing Board since January 2018. Her previous experience includes over 40 years in economic and workforce development, education, and women and family issues. She is also the Principal and Owner of a business, Marie Sullivan LLC, focused on advancing possibilities of businesses, nonprofits, and government entities to achieve their strategic, innovative, and impactful goals.

Dr. Nerini, who represents District 5, has been serving on the District’s Governing Board since January 2018. His previous experience includes more than 20 years as a Student Affairs professional, working with new and transfer students to ensure their successful transition to college life.  More recently as a school counselor, he works closely with MCCCD to provide students the resources and opportunities available for a successful post-secondary experience.

The MCCCD Governing Board further strengthens our System by providing strategic direction and oversight on matters that support the Maricopa Community Community Colleges educational mission, philosophy, and objectives of serving our students and community.
