Twenty-three of Arizona’s highest achieving Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) students were recently honored for their outstanding academic endeavors at a special, virtual All-Arizona Academic Recognition Ceremony. The students were a part of this year’s All-Arizona Academic Team program, which recognizes high-achieving Phi Theta Kappa honors students.
“It is with great pleasure that we are able to celebrate these 23 bright students for their incredible achievements during Community College Awareness Month,” said Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, MCCCD Interim Chancellor. “This month-long observance also brings the opportunity to recognize our Colleges for their commitment to the success of our students and community. The exemplary students of the All-Arizona Academic Team have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership within their communities, making them well-deserved of Arizona’s highest community college achievement.”
The Maricopa Community Colleges offer higher education to students with the fewest resources and the greatest obstacles, making it accessible and affordable for all students, in addition to serving as a vital lifeline helping communities meet basic needs. Thanks to the tools MCCCD provides students to help achieve academic success, these All-Arizona Academic Team members are poised to transfer to a university with academic scholarships, enhancing each student's ability to meet the needs of an in-demand workforce.
This year’s 23 honorees represent nine of the Maricopa Community Colleges and include students pursuing a variety of degrees and careers, including biomedical sciences, cybersecurity, public health, veterinary science, accounting, education, psychology, performing arts, public service and public policy. All honorees are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in their selected field, and several intend to pursue graduate degrees.
Each year, All-Arizona team members are selected for their intellectual rigor by maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher (4.0 scale), working toward an associate degree, demonstrating leadership and service, and showcasing their commitment to extending their education beyond the classroom to benefit society during the pandemic.
