Congratulations on taking the next step to further your higher education goals as a first-generation college student! Beginning your post-secondary educational journey can seem daunting, especially without firsthand knowledge about the process. For many, a parent or sibling can help you navigate the ins and outs of college, but as a first-generation college student, you might not have that resource.
At Maricopa Community Colleges, with ten colleges and thirty-one satellite locations, 47% of students enrolled in the Fall 2023 semester identify as first-generation college students. We’ve compiled a list of valuable resources for first-generation college students to guide them throughout their college experience.
- Attend New Student Orientation – New Student Orientation is a great way to familiarize yourself with your college campus. It’s also an excellent opportunity to meet other students and learn about the expectations of college life. Read our blog about succeeding during your first year at Maricopa Community Colleges.
- Apply for Financial Aid – Not sure how you will afford tuition, books, and fees? Maricopa Community Colleges offers various financial aid options to help ease the cost of college. Be sure to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine your eligibility for grants, scholarships, and student loans. It’s important to know that by taking out student loans, you’ll pay it back with interest, while grants and scholarships are considered gifts that don’t have to be repaid. - Apply for Scholarships – The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation offers a variety of scholarships to students attending Maricopa Community Colleges. By completing just one application, you can apply for hundreds of scholarships. Apply for scholarships at www.mcccdf.org. Remember, scholarships are gifts that don’t need to be repaid.
- Meet With an Advisor – Meeting with an academic advisor can help you navigate your college journey. Academic advisors help you choose the right courses, plan your educational goals, and ensure you’re on the right track toward graduation. They can also provide resources and support to help you succeed.
- Take Advantage of Faculty Office Hours – If your instructor offers office hours, take advantage of this opportunity. Use office hours to introduce yourself, get extra assistance, talk about grades, or clarify any questions about the material being taught. When attending office hours, be prepared and bring questions and relevant class materials.
- Use Available Campus Resources – Each of our colleges has free resources available to enrolled students to help them succeed academically, including tutoring, writing centers, learning centers, and libraries. One-on-one tutoring is available for math, science, writing, and other subjects. Check with your college campus to learn how to connect with a tutor.
- Ask for Help – Don’t hesitate to ask for help if needed. College can be challenging, and most students juggle part-time or full-time jobs and take courses. It’s important to remember that you are not alone in your academic journey.
- Get Involved on Campus and in the Community – Join clubs and organizations, engage in extracurricular activities, and participate in events on your college campus. These opportunities will help you build leadership skills and meet new people.
- Embrace Your First-Generation Identity – Remember, you’re not alone. In fact, 47% of Maricopa Community College students identify as first-generation students. Share your experiences, learn from others, and embrace your identity as a proud first-generation college student.
- Take Care of Your Mental Health – Taking care of mental health is essential. Incorporate self-care practices into your daily routine, including getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising. If you’re struggling with your mental health, don’t hesitate to ask for help. If you need support managing changes, stress, overcoming challenges, gaining a sense of self, or managing crises, visit Counseling Services on your college campus for confidential services. - Use Time Management Tips – To effectively manage and use your time to achieve academic success, create a schedule that includes class time, homework and projects time, study time, and me time. Remember to set realistic goals, prioritize your tasks, and stay organized to make the most of your time.
- Share Your Successes – Celebrate your achievements with your family and friends, no matter how big or small. Sharing your successes with others can inspire and motivate you to complete your certificate or degree and may encourage other family members and friends to enroll in college. And you’ll be able to show them the ropes.
While navigating college as a first-generation student, you may have a few bumps as you adjust to college life. And that’s OK.
